Masjid Al-Islam was founded in 1970 as mosque number 60 under the Nation of Islam.
After the passing of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad in 1975, the community came under the leadership of Imam W.D. Muhammad. The mosque transitioned into mainstream Sunni Islam and was renamed Masjid Al-Islam.
It’s located at 3620 Buena Vista Pike, Nashville, TN 37218.
It has been a central institution for African American Muslims in Nashville, closely connected to the Clara Mohammed School, which also began in 1970 to provide education.

ABOUT US
Masjid Al-Islam, established in 1970, is dedicated to seeking the blessings of Allah (SWT) through the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the example of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Imam Yusuf Abdullah served faithfully from 1977, representing Tennessee in the Southern Association of Masjids and Centers until 2025. Today, Imam Hamid Abdullah continues that tradition as Resident Imam.

Our History
1965- Earnest X - Founded the Mohammed mosque study group
1967- Minister Clarence X grew and continued to grow the study group and established the community
1970 — Founded as Mosque No. 60 under the Nation of Islam.
1970–Present — Closely connected with Clara Mohammed School, providing Islamic education.
1975 — Transitioned into Sunni Islam under Imam W.D. Mohammed; renamed Masjid Al-Islam in the early '80's.
